HMS Royal Alfred acted as Headquarters, Flag Officer Schleswig Holstein, between 1945 and 1946. The site of a Kriegsmarine training establishment, it was initially occupied by 6 Guards Tank Brigade. A few weeks later it was handed over to the Royal Navy and they remained there for about a year. In 1946 it was handed back to the Army and renamed Connaught Barracks.
