Updated 27 July 2024

Itzehoe was the responsibility of the following higher formations:
7th Armoured Division 5 May 45
Guards Division 1 Jul 46
Hamburg District 31 Dec 46

There were three German barracks in Itzehoe within the town boundaries and all were full of PW/displaced persons on the arrival of the British Army.

North of the town on Langer Peter two side by side, Hanseaten Kaserne later Borgard Barracks (West) and Max-von-Gallwitz Kaserne later Richmond Barracks (East) along with south-east of the town Gudewill Kaserne later Conway Barracks.

65th (Norfolk Yeomanry) Anti-Tank Regiment RA were the first occupational troops in requisitioned civilian accommodation on Wallstraße arriving 10 May 45 and departing for 11th Armoured Division 30 May 45.

HQ 7th Armoured Division 1945-1946 (1) not in Borgard Barracks as recorded many times on the internet, after extensive research including visits to the town and a member of the forum having relatives living in the area back in the 1940s, confirming the British Army were located here: Norddeutscher Netzwerk Offices, Brunnstraße 23, Itzehoe.

Thanks to Itzehoe Stadtarchiv for this image not knowing this complex was used by the British Army!
