Part II

Eckernförde is a City of approximately 23,000 situated on the Baltic coast 10 kilometres NW of the major port of Kiel. It sits on a narrow strip of land, about 1 km across at its widest point, that separates the Baltic Sea from the Windebyer Noor. Approximately 2.5 km (1.6 miles) east is the district of Louisenburg containing a harbour area protected by substantial sea defences. It is home to the entire fleet of submarines operated by today’s Kriegsmarine.

Situated in the Eckernförde area, circa 1949, was the Aquatic Warfare Training Unit for BAOR. Back then it was renowned for the joys of freezing boat landings, Kapok bridges and landing craft.
