HMS Royal Caroline – 1945-1946
HMS Caroline is thought to have been divided between Lübeck and Travemünde. Its duties are unclear at the moment, but as the River Trave would eventually be part of the border between East and West Germany tensions would possibly have been a little high.
Travemünde is about 18km from Lübeck by road, and would be a similar distance by water.
1 Commando Brigade Royal Marines – Baltic Coast Summer 1945
(Including 45 & 46 Commando Royal Marines [3 & 6Army Commando may also have been under command])
The Brigade was one of the first British troops to enter the Hanseatic City of Lübeck in early May 1945. After the final surrender of Germany the Brigade handed over control of the City (except for the Docks) to the 15th Scottish Division, and deployed north along the Baltic Coast as a Guard Force, as well as carrying out security duties in the Travemünde Docks (the River Trave formed the boundary between the embryo British and Russian Zones of Occupation in this area). The Brigade returned to the UK in July 1945 to reorganise pending a possible re-deployment to the Far East.
