The Hospital was designed to provide enhanced “Cottage Hospital” style back-up medical facilities to those available on the nearby large RAF operational flying base. The island was relatively isolated with no road, only a single track railway line across the Hindenburg Dam, to the mainland and some 150 miles to the next military hospital, BMH Hamburg.
