For a short period from August 1945 the renowned Fighter Ace, Group Captain James “Johnnie” Johnson D.F.C. and Bar, D.S.O. and Bar, was the Station Commander of RAF Lübeck. Previously he was Wing Commander – Flying (Wing Leader) of 127 Wing, and moved to Eindhoven some time in 1945 as Officer Commanding of 124 Wing. RAF Lübeck played and important role during the 1947/8 Berlin airlift at the western end of the northern of the three air corridors into Berlin. Now a civil air field used by budget airlines. In 2006 the departure area featured a large montage of black and white photos featuring the airfield during this era with many RAF transport planes prominent.
