Winterberg is in North Rhine-Westphalia in the Hochsauerlandkreis district, about 90km west of Kassel, about 110km SE of Dortmund, and about 80km south of Paderborn.

For many years, it was used as a Leave Centre for troops in BAOR, and when the centres closed it was still used as a ski resort by troops stationed in BAOR. It was also the home of one of a chain of stations involved in the Radar system, better known as “Gee”.
