Built for the Wehrmacht in 1935, Crocker Barracks started life as a food storage depot and bakery.
Named after General Sir John Tredinnick Crocker, GCB, KBE, DSO, MC (1896-1963)who was a British Army officer and corps commander during World War II. It had been used by the British Army from 1945 to 2002, although it wasn’t fully in British hands until May 1954 when the Americans handed it over.
The barracks was used a logistics base and consisted of large silos which had been converted to living accommodation. Due to the amount of money that would be needed to bring the barracks up to modern health and safety regulations, it was handed over to the Stadt who then decided that demolition should take place in April 2006. A fire station, ambulance station and 250 new homes are to be built on the former site.
