RAF Fassberg

Page under Revision

RAF Fassberg was a small airfield on the northen outskirts of the town of Fassberg, Lower Saxony. It is approximately 39km north of Celle, 30km south-east of Soltau, and  95km south of Hamburg. Along with many other airfields in Germany, Fassberg played a part in the Berlin Airlift. It was home to a variety of aircraft, military and civil, carrying supplies to Berlin for much of the Airlift. U.S. aircraft were also on station for just over a year.

The number given to Fassberg on occupation was B152 before being named RAF Fassberg. It ceased operations in early 1957 and was handed back to the German Airforce.

Closed 1957, handed over to German Air Force.

(1) 350 Sqn arrived at Fassberg less than 24 hours before the surrender was signed.
(2) Aircraft type is unclear at this time.
(3) Aircraft type is unclear at this time. May also have flown the LF XIV E from this base)
(4) Disbanded at Fassberg, 3rd July 1945.
(5) Disbanded at Fassberg, 2nd July 1945.
(6) Transferred to Armée de l'Air on 25 November 1945 at Fassberg.
(7) Disbanded at Fassberg 31st March 1946. It is thought that this was a renumbering of 274 Sqn in September 1945.
(8) Transferred to Belgian control October 1946.
(9) 26 Sqn is another that has had numerous reincarnations, and this makes it a little difficult to pinpoint correct details. Any information appreciated.
(10) Nothing definite known about this squadron at this time.
(11) Believed to have been based at Fassberg during the Berlin Airlift, flying Dakotas.
(12) 24 Sqn RAF cannot be traced to this location as of yet. It is possible that this was 24 Sqn RAF Regiment, as they disbanded in Gemany 1st Jan 1958.
(13) There are two possibilities here. 27 Sqn was involved in the Berlin Airlift with Dakota aircraft, disbanding in 1950. A reference also gives 27 Sqn RAF Regiment as being at Fassberg at some time in the LAA role. Any information appreciated.
(14) Disbanded July 1949.
(15) Disbanded June 1949.

Details of some Squadrons that were based here are hazy and/or confused. If any one has any details that can clarify dates and details, they will be most welcome. It is also thought that the station was closed for a time to allow the runway to be extended, but no firm confirmation has been found to date.
