Hamburg's Rathaus - showing the devastation of the Allied bombing.

One can only imagine what the lady on the left had been through. Hamburg like Dresden, had also been victim to fire storms caused by the used of high expolsive followed by incendiary bombs. Living here would have affected the most basic of human requirements; water, shelter, food, security, stability, family. Most people in Britain today have been fortunate never to have lost one of the above privileges, never mind all - for quite a period of time.

As easy as it might be to say, "well they started it", the destruction caused by the bombing on boths side was  ludicrous.  Unfortunately, even by the end of the war both sides still had not realised that bombing people into submission, conventionally, would do little except strenghthen the opposition's resolve.
